Neal Caren is the Director of the First Year Seminar and First Year Launch Programs and a Professor in the Department of Sociology. He researches protest and social movements, including media coverage of protest organizations, the effectiveness of protest tactics, and the impact of social movements on electoral politics, focusing on using computational data science methods on textual data. Professor Caren is the co-author of Rough Draft of History: A Century of US Social Movements in the News (Princeton University Press 2022). Since 2015, he has edited the interdisciplinary journal Mobilization, which publishes research on contentious politics. Professor Caren regularly teaches Sociological Perspectives (SOCI 101) and Social and Economic Justice (SOCI 274). He enjoys running in Carolina North and biking the OEC trails.
